Best Independent Retailer Northern Design Awards 2014 Finalist

Here is our entry for the award:

Julia Jones Ltd is a home furnishing store based in Conwy, North Wales. In business for 44 years, we offer a personal service from a design-led team.

Offering a range of contemporary suppliers from throughout Europe, we specialize in giving our customers options with bespoke products tailored to the individual client’s space, taste and needs. For example, we sell modular sofas which can be arranged in countless different shapes and sizes, and one dining chair range we offer has over 1000 different combinations – so there’s an option for everyone! We also offer a complimentary CAD spatial planning service to our clients to make sure the furniture they want will fit and look great in their room. Our latest creation is a collection of hand selected lighting for our clients from major European lighting manufacturers, with a focus on LED lighting.

Our chosen manufacturer partners are selected for their reliability and good business ethics, while we select our collections for their quality, design, and good value. We believe in offering practical, well designed furnishings at our best price throughout the year, so no silly sales with inflated RRPs. This means our clients can buy when its right for them with the knowledge that the same item won’t be reduced next week.Julia Jones Ltd Business Cards

This long established family business was created by Julia in 1970, originally specialising in bespoke soft furnishing. Julia’s son Rob joined her in 1994 to help grow and diversify the business. Over the years we have experienced our fair share of hardship, keeping the business going through 3 recessions. But through keeping fresh with new ideas, we have managed to hang in there and grow stronger. Julia finally retired (for the second time!) in January, with the business at the beginning of yet another exciting new step when in our fourth decade of trading, we launched our new online store.

Our web store allows us to reach beyond the North West to retail throughout the UK and Ireland, but by retaining a bricks & mortar store, we can offer the best of both worlds: the same great service whether we deal with a client face to face or online. Our long distance clients can benefit from our personal service, but also the vast majority of our local clients also use the website to browse collections, get ideas and sometimes order online to collect instore. Our client feedback tells us that people love the fact that we are a showroom that they can visit or call instead of just an anonymous warehouse. Our website is also used throughout our store via large LED displays and tablets where people can access our digital catalogue. We also connect with our customer base through our many social media channels on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and most recently Houzz, sharing product news as well as unusual design ideas that catch our interest.

We are environmentally and socially conscious, and recycle all our packaging and materials where possible. Even our discontinued pattern books get a new lease of life – they go to local craft clubs, schools and charities to be used creatively. This year Rob hosted a group of college students with special needs, who came to the shop to learn about interior design. We donated fabric and wallpaper which the students used to test their new design skills on their own projects refurbishing furniture.

When clients visit us for the first time, they often say they are just looking for inspiration. We sell it online, in person, and in any shape or colour you choose!
